Overview

The City of Mequon, Wisconsin, recognized the need to modernize its IT infrastructure and optimize its IT staffing to better serve its community and internal operations. To achieve this, the City engaged Avèro to conduct a comprehensive IT assessment and develop a strategic plan. The project encompassed a thorough evaluation of the IT infrastructure and staffing across approximately 12 City departments, aiming to lay the groundwork for informed decision-making and strategic improvements over the next three to five years.

Objectives

The project aimed to:

  • Assess the current state of the City’s IT infrastructure, including hardware, software, and systems.
  • Analyze IT staffing levels and expertise to identify any gaps or areas for enhancement.
  • Perform a gap analysis and current-state analysis to pinpoint deficiencies and areas of potential improvement.
  • Develop strategic recommendations and an IT Strategic Roadmap & IT Strategic Plan (ITSP) to guide the City’s future IT infrastructure and staffing decisions.

Approach

Avèro’s approach to the project involved multiple key phases:

  1. IT Infrastructure Assessment

The initial phase focused on evaluating the City’s existing IT infrastructure. This involved reviewing the current hardware, software, and systems in use across City departments to understand the technological landscape and identify any outdated or inefficient technologies.

  1. IT Staffing Analysis

Parallel to the infrastructure assessment, Avèro conducted an IT staffing analysis. This process aimed to assess the current IT workforce’s size, skills, and capabilities to determine if the City’s staffing levels were adequate and aligned with its IT needs.

  1. Gap and Current-State Analysis

Using data gathered from the infrastructure and staffing assessments, Avèro performed a gap analysis and a current-state analysis. These analyses helped identify discrepancies between the current IT environment and the optimal state, highlighting areas that required attention and improvement.

  1. Strategic Recommendations and Roadmap Development

Based on the comprehensive assessments and analyses, Avèro developed strategic recommendations and an IT Strategic Roadmap & ITSP. These documents outlined a clear direction for enhancing the City’s IT infrastructure and staffing, prioritizing initiatives, and suggesting actionable steps to achieve the City’s IT goals.

  1. Presentation to the Common Council

Upon completing the ITSP, Avèro presented the key findings and strategic recommendations to the Common Council. This presentation aimed to inform the Council members about the current IT challenges and proposed strategies, facilitating informed decision-making and consensus on the way forward.

Outcome

The IT Assessment & Strategic Plan project provided the City of Mequon with a detailed understanding of its current IT environment and a clear path forward for modernization and improvement. The strategic recommendations and roadmap developed by Avèro equip the City with the tools and information necessary to make informed decisions about its IT infrastructure and staffing, ensuring that IT initiatives are aligned with its overall goals and capable of supporting the City’s operations efficiently and effectively over the next three to five years.
